Basement Fireplaces and Media Centers for Utah County Homes

If you’re putting a fireplace in a basement in Utah County, wood is the wrong fuel, and it isn’t close. American Fork, Lehi, Saratoga Springs, and Eagle Mountain all sit in the part of Utah County covered by the state’s mandatory no-burn rules. During winter inversion season, from November 1 to March 1, the Utah Division of Air Quality can call mandatory no-burn days that shut down wood fireplaces, wood stoves, and pellet stoves. Natural gas appliances are acceptable on those days. So every fireplace Millgate builds into a basement is gas or electric, and you can actually use it in January, when you want it most.

Gas fireplaces tie into your home’s existing natural gas service from Enbridge Gas Utah (the utility that was Dominion Energy until the 2024 rebrand). In a basement, that usually means a direct-vent unit that pulls combustion air from outside and vents out through an exterior wall, so the location of the media wall and the location of the vent have to be planned together.

Electric fireplaces need no gas line and no vent, just a dedicated circuit. They’re the simpler choice when the wall you want isn’t on an exterior side of the house, and newer models do a convincing flame effect.

In Saratoga Springs, a recent 1,040-square-foot Millgate bid included a cable-management chase tube for a wall-mounted TV in the family room, with components below the screen, plus pricing for 5.1 and 7.1 surround wiring. That’s the same media-wall backbone we build around a fireplace.

In Eagle Mountain, the average household is 4.26 people according to the city’s 2024 demographic report, so we plan media walls around a big sectional and sight lines from more than one seat. In Lehi and American Fork, if your home already has a fireplace on the main floor, the basement mantel can match it. We match stain, trim style, and paint to what’s upstairs wherever our suppliers carry it. And if you work in tech around Silicon Slopes and game or stream after hours, ask for hardwired CAT6 behind the TV instead of relying on Wi-Fi two floors down.

Our Fireplace & Media Center Process

Step 1 — Free Consultation

We walk the room, find your exterior walls, gas service, and electrical panel, and talk about TV size, seating, speakers, and what goes in the cabinets.

Step 2 — Floor Plan Sketch and Feature Sketch

You get a floor plan sketch of the basement and a sketch of the media wall itself: fireplace, mantel height, TV location, and cabinet layout. The formal bid prices each option.

Step 3 — Permitting and Scheduling

Millgate pulls the permit and schedules the work. If your city requires a gas-line diagram or pressure test for a gas fireplace, we tell you upfront.

Step 4 — Framing and Rough-Ins

The media wall is framed, the gas line or dedicated circuit is run, the vent path is set, and the TV chase tube and surround wiring go in. The city inspects before walls close.

Step 5 — Drywall, Fireplace and Paint

Drywall goes up, the fireplace unit is set, and the room is painted.

Step 6 — Cabinets, Mantel and Trim

Media cabinets, the stained-wood mantel, shelving, and trim are installed.

Step 7 — Final Inspection, Walkthrough and Warranty

The city signs off, we light it up with you, and your 2-year builder’s warranty begins.

What Does a Basement Fireplace and Media Center Cost?

The fireplace unit you choose and the size of the cabinet run drive most of the price, so Millgate prices this from your sketch, not from a sheet. For context, a 2026 Millgate bid for a complete 1,040-square-foot basement finish in Saratoga Springs, which included a TV chase tube in the family room, came to $48,300. A fireplace and built-in media center are added on top of a finish like that.

What moves the number:

Gas or electric. Gas adds a gas line and a vent; electric adds a dedicated circuit. If the city requires a gas-line diagram or pressure test, it’s billed separately.
The fireplace unit. Size, style, and brand vary widely.
Cabinet run and color tier. Longer runs and higher color tiers cost more.
Surround sound. 5.1 wiring is $230; 7.1 is $315; speaker installation starts at $35 each.
Lighting and data. Dimmers are $79 each; CAT6 lines are $15 each.

TVs, projectors, and A/V equipment aren’t included, and Millgate doesn’t mount TVs. The chase tube and wiring are in place so you or your A/V installer can finish the hookup in an afternoon.

Can you put a gas fireplace in a basement? +

Yes. Most basement gas fireplaces are direct-vent units that draw combustion air from outside and vent through an exterior wall. The fireplace needs to sit on or near an exterior wall with a code-compliant vent location, so we plan the media wall around that from the first sketch.

Can I put a wood-burning fireplace in my basement in Utah County? +

We don’t recommend it. American Fork, Lehi, Saratoga Springs, and Eagle Mountain all fall under Utah’s mandatory no-burn rules, which can prohibit wood fireplaces, wood stoves, and pellet stoves on poor air-quality days during inversion season, November 1 to March 1. Natural gas appliances are acceptable on those days, and electric fireplaces burn nothing, so either one works year-round.

Gas or electric: which fireplace is better for a basement? +

Gas puts out real heat and a real flame, but needs a gas line and an exterior wall for the vent. Electric needs only a dedicated circuit, can go on any wall, and costs less to install. If the wall you want is interior, electric is usually the answer.

Can an electric fireplace heat a basement? +

It can take the chill off a room, but it isn’t a primary heat source. A typical plug-in electric fireplace puts out around 5,000 BTUs. Millgate adds heating runs from your furnace to every finished room, so the fireplace is there for comfort and ambiance.

How much does a built-in entertainment center with a fireplace cost? +

It depends on the fireplace unit, gas versus electric, and the length and color tier of the cabinet run. Surround wiring is $230 for 5.1 or $315 for 7.1, and dimmers are $79 each. Request a free estimate and we’ll price it from a sketch of your wall.

Will you mount my TV and set up my sound system? +

We install the chase tube, low-voltage lines, and surround wiring inside the walls, and we install speakers starting at $35 each. Mounting the TV and connecting A/V equipment aren’t included, so your installer can finish the hookup quickly once we’re done.

Can you match the mantel and cabinets to the fireplace upstairs? +

Yes. We choose stain, trim, and paint to match your main floor wherever our suppliers carry a match. One customer wrote that their finished basement “looked like it was done at the same time as the building of their home.”

Do I need a permit for a basement gas fireplace in Utah County? +

Yes. Gas line work and new appliances fall under the building permit, and inspectors check the gas line and vent. If your city requires a gas-line diagram or pressure test, Millgate coordinates it and tells you the cost upfront.
